FAQ's - Milk Tooth Filling

Kids tooth fillings are typically performed with local anesthesia to ensure a painless experience for your child. The dentist will numb the area before starting the procedure, ensuring minimal discomfort. After the filling, your child may experience some temporary sensitivity, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

The longevity of kids tooth fillings depends on various factors, including the type of filling material used and how well your child maintains their oral hygiene. Generally, tooth-colored composite fillings can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years. Regular dental check-ups and proper oral care, such as brushing and flossing, can help extend the lifespan of the fillings.

Kids tooth fillings are designed to restore the functionality of the affected tooth. Once the filling is placed and any initial sensitivity subsides, your child should be able to eat and chew normally. It is important to note that maintaining a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks can help prevent further cavities and promote overall dental health.

Kids tooth fillings have come a long way in terms of aesthetics. Modern tooth-colored composite fillings are designed to match the natural shade of your child’s teeth, making them virtually undetectable. The filling material is carefully blended and shaped to ensure a seamless integration, resulting in a natural-looking smile that your child can confidently show off.

Milk Tooth Filling

After informing a parent their child has a cavity, the most common question I am asked is: “Do baby teeth need fillings? Can’t we wait till the tooth falls out?’

The answer is not always simple. It depends upon few factors. Three Factors Influencing if Baby Teeth Need Fillings:

  1. How close the tooth is to falling out
  2. Calculating the size of the cavity
  3. Assessing your child’s cavity-risk

How Close is the Milk Tooth To Falling Out? | Child Teeth Filling India

If the tooth is going to fall out soon, we may recommend just improving oral hygiene with brushing and flossing as well as coming to regular check-ups with your pediatric dentist – Child Teeth Filling India. This will typically be recommended if the baby tooth is loose or is projected to get loose within the next 6 -12 months.

We assess this by seeing how much of the baby tooth root is still present.  As the adult tooth prepares to come in, it will dissolve the baby tooth root more and more over time. X-rays are necessary to answer this question.

Calculating the size of the cavity | Kids Filling South Delhi

Most cavities we see on the X-ray or on our clinical exam have reached the inside layer of the tooth called dentin – Kids Filling South Delhi. Dentin is softer and more porous than the outer white layer called enamel.  When the cavity is in that inner layer, it can spread fast.  At that point we recommend filling the tooth with a white filling.

If the cavity is bigger and on multiple surfaces of the tooth we may recommend the tooth be restored with a crown.  If the cavity is so big that a filling or crown wouldn’t fix the tooth properly, your pediatric dentist will recommend extraction – Kids Teeth Filling Cost India.

Sometime the tooth only has a tiny “Pre-cavity spot”.  Pre-cavity spots are areas of demineralization where the cavity- causing sugar bugs are just starting to invade and infect the tooth. They have barely scratched the surface of the outer enamel layer of the tooth.  In these cases, pediatric dentists will monitor these areas to see if they get bigger.  They will recommend you improve oral hygiene and maybe even increase the number of times you clean your teeth daily.

Assessing your child’s cavity risk | Kids Filling South Delhi

Cavities are infections and may recommend fixing cavities on baby teeth if it is a significant infection. Cavities can pass from tooth to tooth, just like a cold – Kids Filling South Delhi. So, if you leave a cavity in a tooth long enough, your child’s other teeth can start to get cavities.  The cavity causing sugar bugs multiply and they swim around in the same environment – your mouth! Why Are Fillings in Milk Teeth Necessary? | Child Teeth Filling India

  • To prevent pain from toothaches
  • To prevent damage to developing permanent teeth
  • To prevent early loss of baby teeth and crowding when adult teeth come in
  • To prevent poor eating habits and malnutrition and promote healthy growth and development
  • To prevent poor sleeping habits and poor school performance which are linked to toothaches
  • And most importantly, to prevent life threatening infections and spread of infection to the brain, sinuses, ears, face, neck, and heart.

Have the Cavity Evaluated | Kids Teeth Filling Cost India

In short, if you have a high risk of getting even more cavities, your pediatric dentist may recommend fixing the tooth so your other teeth are protected – Kids Filling South Delhi.

As you can see, there are many factors in deciding whether a tooth needs to be fixed.
