Tongue-tie (also called ankyloglossia) refers to when a baby is born with a narrow strip of tissue connecting the tip of their tongue to the bottom of their mouth. Normally, this connective tissue is meant to dissolve in the womb, but tongue-tie still occurs in approximately 4 per 1,000 births.
In infancy: breastfeeding difficulties are common, as well as colic and reflux. In childhood: speech difficulties, poor jaw growth /dental crowding and fussy eating are common. In adulthood: head and neck tension, snoring and sleep apnoea may be related.
Correlated symptoms of a tongue tie can be as simple as difficulty sticking the tongue out or as complex as: trouble with breastfeeding (latching) as a newborn, eating and speech issues, digestion issues and sleep/airway issues. Other very specific symptoms correlated to being tongue tied are head and neck tension, midline asymmetries/misalignment, chronic headaches or lower jaw tension.
Tongue-tie and feeding problems for babies
Many babies with tongue-tie can breast and bottle feed successfully. However, a tight tongue-tie can interfere with a baby’s ability to breastfeed and, in some cases, bottle feed. Mothers may experience sore or damaged nipples and the baby may have difficulty drinking enough to gain weight.
Signs that a baby could be tongue-tied include:
Tongue-tie and speech problems
Tongue-tie in toddlers seems less common than in babies, suggesting that a short frenum can resolve itself as the child grows.
In persistent cases of tongue-tie, the child may have certain speech problems. They may have difficulties creating sounds that need the tongue or tongue tip to:
Touch the roof of the mouth – such as the t, d, n, l, s and z sounds
Arch off the floor of the mouth – such as the ‘r’ sound.

Lip or tongue tie surgery is designed to clip the small amount of soft tissue that is preventing the tongue or lips from moving freely. This surgical procedure, which uses a soft-tissue laser, is the preferred method of treatment for lip and tongue ties because it can be done in the comfort of a pediatric dental office – tongue tie laser surgery.
No anesthesia is required for this type of surgery. Instead, a pediatric dentist will administer a small amount of local anesthetic to the tongue or lip area. The local anesthetic will numb the area and prevent your child from experiencing any pain. Once the area is properly numbed, your pediatric dentist will use a soft-tissue laser to neatly cut the excess tissue that is holding the tongue in place.
Children’s Pain Killers can be used for a few days after the procedure to ensure your baby is comfortable – Frenectomy Gums Surgery Delhi.
Continue to feed your little one regularly, give your child plenty of attention and follow the dosing instructions for Children’s Pain Killers to relieve any discomfort. You’ll find that feeding your infant will go much more smoothly.
The inability to nurse well not only has physical consequences but emotional ones as well. Mothers who breastfeed often feel a bond with their babies – tongue tie surgery cost in Delhi. When nursing is difficult or impossible, it may be more difficult to establish these feelings. Tongue tie surgery can correct feeding problems and alleviate a mother’s discouragement. Breastfeeding can become a positive experience and the mother can feel good about her abilities.
After tongue tie laser surgery, you’ll need to gently stretch your child’s lips and tongue so the frenulum doesn’t reattach. Our pediatric dentists will give you instructions on how to do this and answer any questions you may have about how to care for your child after tongue tie release. Many parents find it easier to do the stretching exercises by placing the baby on their back, feet facing away. It’s normal for the soft tissue to be light yellow or white where the tongue tie was released. It’ll take time for the tissue to heal and return to its normal pink color. It’s been our experience that babies don’t appreciate the stretching exercises, but usually calm down quickly.
If you have any questions or concerns after your child’s appointment, don’t hesitate to call our clinic at 9625 678 787.
