Wisdom Teeth – Home pain management

Why do we have wisdom teeth?

Adults can have up to 32 teeth. The wisdom teeth appear generally between late teen years and middle twenties, mainly around 17 to 25 years of age, right at the end of the mouth. But they can also appear at the later stage of life.
People often have jaws that are too small for all 32 teeth to fit – 28 are often the most we have room for. Hence, if all the other teeth are healthy and available then there may not be enough space for the wisdom teeth to emerge through correctly.

Wisdom Teeth Pain and Infection

Many times, wisdom teeth become confined in the jawbone and do not break through the gum tissue. Sometimes wisdom teeth aren’t straight or aligned properly and that causes cavities or gum disease. If wisdom teeth aren’t straight or aligned properly, or blocked by other teeth and have a flap of the gum tissue over them, plaque and food can enter around the tooth and cause cavities, gum disease or knowledge tooth infection.

X-rays are obtained to see if you have wisdom teeth and how they are positioned in your jawbone.

Complications of impacted wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are difficult to clean, and food can get stuck in them.

If a wisdom tooth isn’t extracted, it can lead to certain issues, such as:

  • Infection
  • Cavities
  • Decay
  • crowding of nearby teeth
  • Difficulty flossing
  • Damage to other teeth
  • Cysts
  • Gum disease

These potential complications are the reason for which some dentists will suggest surgery for impacted wisdom teeth, even if they generate symptoms.

Home remedies

Impacted wisdom teeth may cause ache, throbbing and soreness. Ultimately, removal of the wisdom teeth can help resolve these problems.

Meanwhile, there are several over-the-counter medical treatments and natural home remedies available. Some of them are:

1. Numbing Gel

A numbing dental gel may help reduce feeling in the gums and dull the ache. These gels are available over the counter or online and contain the active ingredient benzocaine.

Almost all dental gels can be applied directly to the affected gums all day. However, it’s essential for a person to follow the prescription given in the product. Also, it is possible to be allergic to benzocaine.

2. Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is a non-prescription (OTC) pain relief medication that helps in diminishing inflammation.

Taking the prescribed dosage on the packet may help relieve the throbbing. It can also lessen the inflammation of the gums associated with wisdom teeth growth.

Ibuprofen or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may be effective pain management until a person can see a dentist for treatment.

3. Ice Pack

Using an ice pack can help reduce throbbing of the jaw, which in turn may relieve ache. Using ice can also have a numbing effect.
A person can try using an ice pack with a tea towel around it against their jaw for about 15 minutes.
The ice pack can be applied on and off with about 15-minutes break until the pain has diminished.

4 Saltwater Rinse

Every now and then, a build-up of bacteria in the broken gums around wisdom teeth can be the cause of the ache. So, rinsing with Saltwater might help treat the infection and lessen the soreness.

To make the saltwater rinse, a person can dissolve a few tablespoons of salt into a glass of freshly boiled water. When the water has somewhat cooled, swish it around the mouth for several minutes, and then spit it out.

A person may want to rinse their mouth with salt water two to three times a day, or until the pain starts to lessen.

Visit your dentist so that she can examine the positioning of your wisdom teeth with the help of an X-Ray. The dentist may advise extractions even before they completely breakout. This can help avoid a more complex and painful extrication in the future. As a rule, one should get their wisdom teeth removed at the earliest, usually in the late teen years, when the root of the teeth hasn’t completely developed and the bones around the teeth are less dense.
